An evening with Mark Wood, Professional Explorer

Thank you to everyone who came to fill an Ettington Chase hotel conference room, support Ettington CFR Scheme and enjoy an evening in the company of Mark Wood, professional explorer, speaker and educator.

The invitation to this event had promised an inspirational evening of insight to Mark's exploring life, in so doing helping us realise how ordinary people can do truly extraordinary things.  This is exactly how it worked out with Mark engaging everyone from start to finish, time passing in a heart beat.  Who will ever forget the video looking in to a polar bear's mouth shot with camera on the end of a hand held ski pole; the frightening sound of the ocean rushing unseen under thin pack ice; or the pause for thought when faced with a life or death decision in sight of Everest's summit?

The way that Mark engaged with the many children present was incredible; bringing everything to life in a language and style that through humour or visual effect reinforced the learning.  Great stuff!

A deep debt of gratitude is therefore due to the totally committed support of Mark himself as well as to Stuart Fleming, the General Manager of the Ettington Chase hotel; he and his team were fantastic to work with.  Their selfless desire to maximise the financial benefit of the evening for Ettington CFR Scheme and ensure a professionally-run event was tremendous.

We were also blessed with amazing raffle prizes that included unique items generously donated by Mark himself, some of his sponsors, local businesses and individual supporters; thank you all.

Some receipts are still being counted but at the time of writing on 20th June the sum of £1,103 has been raised - and thanks to the generosity described, all of this is profit helping to keep the scheme active and therefore lives saved.
